A small, mixed-use commercial building on a corner site. When you draw a line as an architect, there’s two sides — inside and outside. This project’s prominent position in an established historical area meant that the community experience of the building from the outside was an important factor in its design.
I was having coffee with the owner one day and he said to me “you know, I’ve got this legacy, this parcel of land with stunning views — if it were you, what would you do with it?’ And I just sat in my studio, thinking about that.
There's a lot of scrutiny when you do a corner building and a heritage site, but the locals loved it, Auckland Council were happy, the Urban Design Panel thought it was a great response to the corner.
